General Educational Development

Here is a great piece of trivia: The GED is an acronym for General Educational Development. It does not stand for General Education Diploma. The American Council on Education is the source for all GED tests and development of new tests.

There will be a new GED test battery coming out in January 2012. This means all students who have started on the current battery (2002 set) will only have until December 2011 to finish on the same battery (2002 set) before their test scores are voided.

The GED consists of five content areas:

1. Social Studies
2. Literature-Language Arts-Reading
3. Science
4. Mathematics
5. Writing Skills-Language Arts

Basic Skills

Basic skills classes are designed to help participants raise their basic skill levels in reading, math, and English. Morning classes meet Monday through Friday from 9:00-11:45 A.M., 1Afternoon classes 12:15-3:00 P.M. Monday through Thursday, or Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:15 p.m.

Literacy

Literacy students often are served in the Read Right program. The Read Right program serves all students who are in need of improving their reading fluency, comprehension, or general reading abilities.

If the student's reading and literacy skills are too low to benefit from GED classes, they can be placed into basic skills classes with Read Right programming or Read Right programming alone.

Careers Class

The careers class is designed to expose participants to career planning and development activities. These classes are available to help students determine career directions, set goals, begin the process of entering the labor market, reenter the labor market, and/or to help participants enter post-secondary training programs.

Topics covered in this class include interest inventories, personality assessment, labor market information, work values, goal setting, resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job seeking, job keeping, and other related information. Other career information is also available including college catalogues, Choices career program, financial aid forms, ACT packets, and completion of college admission forms. Careers classes are offered on a rotating basis throughout the year.

English Language Learners

English Language Learners are served in classes Monday-Friday 8-11:45 PM. These classes are designed to teach speaking, writing, reading and listening to individuals who have limited English skills.

Students are grouped according to abilities and may have volunteers to assist them in individual sessions. Not all students can have volunteers due to the lack of volunteers and the space to accomodate them. Every effort is made to give each student the services they need.

Part of the ELL program is the Civics curriculum that each student must have in their programming. Students will be given information on local, state, and federal government functions and learn about each branch of government. The role of US citizen is an important role and students must understand not only their rights but their responsiblities as US citizens. Students may have guest speakers, field trips, and other opportunities in the Civics portion of the ELL program.

Other Opportunities

Read Right programming is available for students who have difficulties with reading. Difficulties in reading can be in decoding text, vocabulary, English as a Second Language, understanding and retaining what is read, as well as other issues. Students are assessed for their reading needs and can take part in Read Right programs if they are appropriate for this service.

The Displaced Homemakers Support Group meets weekly to assist people who are divorced, widowed, or separated to establish self sufficiency and independence. Students who are displaced homemakers qualify for all Adult Education services in addition to the support group.
